Best Route Shape
For a first Greece trip, start in Athens, add Santorini for the classic caldera experience, then use Crete if you want a larger island with beaches, food, old towns, and more space. The route works best in eight to ten days rather than a rushed week.
Athens First
Athens gives the trip historical grounding and practical flight access. Spend two nights if time is tight, three if you want museums, neighborhoods, food, and a calmer pace before the islands.
Santorini Expectations
Santorini is stunning but busy and expensive in peak season. Stay for views if that is your dream, but do not expect it to be the most relaxed or best-value island. Book early and plan sunsets with crowd reality in mind.
Why Add Crete
Crete makes the route feel more complete. It has beaches, towns, food, archaeological sites, hikes, and enough scale for a real island stay. It is better for longer trips than adding many tiny ferry hops.
